Fort Fincastle

Fort Fincastle

A beautiful view of the fort.

Resting on the highest hill of Nassau, Fort Fincastle was completed in 1793. Its purpose was to keep a watchful eye for pirates or other raiders. Royal Governor Lord Dunmore called it, “a battery upon a hill.” Life for the soldiers was not easy. They remained prepared for any assault through drills, and musket preparation. Even though a shot was never fired, this fort still watches over the people.

After entering the site, the first thing you will see at the top of the stairs are the massive cannons. These huge cannons were able to pivot around to aim at their target and blow it away quickly. In addition to the cannons, you will be treated to a spectacular view of the harbor, Paradise Island, and the soldier’s barracks.

Imagine trying to move one of these around in the heat of battle!

There are a few niches to check out; but they are small. With three people it gets pretty crowded! These areas were mostly for storage but could have also been a way to contain any person as well.

Entry is $1 to explore the site. All proceeds are used to preserve the site.
