Hadrian’s Gate once divided the city into two.

Athens is scattered with amazing ruins. The temple of Olympian Zeus is one of the most amazing to see. This use to be one of the largest temples to the father of all ancient gods. Though most of the temple had been destroyed, it’s a thrill to see several of the large columns still standing proud, and offering a better idea of how large this temple once stood.

Looking at the temple from the ground, it’s easy to gain a better perspective on how massive this monument was.

Inside, there was a statue dedicated to both Zeus and Hadrian. Though this temple began its initial construction in 515 BC, it wasn’t completed until Caesar Hadrian’s time 131-132 BC.

The grounds all around the area are filled with marble pieces, homes, and drains. Across the way, stands Hadrian’s Gate. This beautiful gate stands as tall as it has since it was built. Roman Caesar Hadrian had this arch constructed to separate the city; the old and new. It even has two different inscriptions based off which side you standing. This arch once became part of a wall, then later part of a church. Today, it stands next to one of the great temples of Athens.

While Hadrian’s gate is always free, the Temple of Olympian Zeus is 2 Euro. This site is included in the combo ticket.
