Ever wanted to walk through the palace/fortress of the Roman Emperor? Well, you are in luck! The city of Split is the place. Emperor Diocletian had decided to retire, build himself a retirement home, and move out of Rome. The Emperor was born here in Croatia in 245 AD, traveled to Rome to rule, retired from being Emperor, and lived out the remaining of his retired life here until his death in 316 AD.

This grand palace became a home to others throughout the ages. People moved into the palace and its grounds during the Middle Ages, and built their homes within the walls. Today, people continue to call the Roman Emperor’s palace their home. People who are living here continued to grow the area and even has modern day comforts. Welcome to the city of Split; a complex mix of cultures, time periods, and history. As you walk ancient narrow sidewalks and view mosaics from the 4th century, you are also greeting with the trappings of the 21st! This city is a maze within itself yet has its charm.
